  • Here is a brief tease for P500 additions lining up in the coming months. […]

An 18xx game (the last two digits are even numbers!)

I exchanged geekmails with the designer on this subject back in May of this year [2018], and he said he wouldn't have capacity to get a reprint up and running for 'at least another year'.

My reading of that was that a reprint is being considered, but it's a way off.

  • Over the coming several months, I anticipate that we will add:

    […]

An 18xx game set outside the US (rats, we almost had it ready for this month - hopefully May)

  • Das nächste GMT 18xx wird 1833NE.

1833NE is an '18xx' game that moves the 1846 rules to New England to portray regional railroading with a vengeance. Players must contend with a rapidly changing landscape as Boston interests first try to link to the Erie canal; then out-flank it entirely via Ogdensburg or Montreal combined with Great Lakes shipping; and finally surrender and deliver New England freight to New York City.

New features include passenger ferries (the 'business class' travel of the age), freight interconnections, and "dot" cities that portray both rural New England towns and Boston's subsidies for commuter traffic. For players familiar with 1846, a quick start summary of rules differences will be provided.

Klingt sehr interessant.

In 1784, Alexander Hamilton founded the Bank of New York, one of the first banks in the United States. The bank was also one of the first companies to issue stock and be traded on the New York stock market. In the mid-1800s, New York became the financial center of the country and played a critical role in financing railroad development. The Bank of New York was known for its conservative lending practices. Railroad “robber barons,” including Jay Gould and Cornelius Vanderbilt, leveraged financial instruments of Wall Street and amassed their wealth through much less conservative means…

18EUS is an 18XX railroad game for 3-5 players that plays in under 4 hours. Players take on roles of “robber barons” competing to amass the most personal wealth over the course of 5-6 sets of stock rounds and operating rounds. The inspiration of the game was to combine favorite elements of multiple previous 18XX games—including 1822, 1862, 18USA, and others—and add a key new feature in the Bank of New York, allowing players to take elective loans or make bank investments. The relative strength of loans versus bank investments is dynamic and dependent on the actions of other players. 18EUS also features tremendous pre-game variability but zero in-game randomness. Players must evaluate strategies both based on the pre-game setup and the actions and potential reactions of other players in order to be successful.

The Bank of New York is the key distinguishing factor of 18EUS. Players, not companies, may take personal loans during stock rounds to fund their investments. These loans are represented as cubes that come off the Bank of New York charter. Alternatively, if players do not hold loans, they may buy shares in the bank. The bank “operates” at the end of each operating round: players holding loans must pay interest, players holding bank shares receive dividends, and the bank stock price (and loan principle) increases. The bank performs better—and loans are worse—when more loans are taken off the charter and when someone owns a bank share.
