I would like to provide a bit more elaborate reasoning behind our decision to go with Soldier standees instead of miniatures, and why there are no plans to upgrade them over the course of the campaign.
The first reason is price. Since the game has a total of 88 Soldiers in 8 different variations (male and female, light and heavy, Episode 1 and Episode 2 gear), the addition of Soldier miniatures would have driven the price of the Deluxe pledge up very significantly. Perseverance is not a miniatures game - it is an immersive thematic Euro, and we find it very important to strike a right balance between the amount of deluxe content and the price, and have a reasonable price tag on even our high-budget option.
The second reason is usability. Soldiers are sometimes “technically” used as a resource, and there is an important gameplay difference between a Heavy and a Light Soldier. As you can see on the board, these two types of Soldiers are referred to with icons, and those icons also appear on the Soldier standees for easy identification. The Soldiers are also player-colored. The player color could be communicated on the minis using colored bases, but you would still have to tell the Soldier type by identifying the sculpt. This would lead to confusion with the amount of different Soldier sculpts we’re talking about - especially if we add the Leaders to the mix, which are often placed together with Soldiers! Now, we could reduce the number of sculpts to address that problem, but that brings us to our third reason….
...our art and thematic concept. One full ingame year has passed between Episodes 1 and 2, and if you look closely at the game, this is reflected on every single component: the main and player boards, the Leaders, and even the resource tokens like Food (which is mostly "island food" in EP2 instead of the food saved from the ship in EP1) or Modern Resources (which look considerably more worn in EP2). This is doubly true to the look of the Soldiers, and we felt that the fine details we can show on an artwork would be lost on a gray miniature. So all in all I argue that the Soldier standees will work even better from an immersion perspective than minis.Huutini ich stimme dir zur, aber wie kommst du auf 200€? Passend dazu auch ein Satz aus dem 1. Update der Kampagne:
This project is really dear to our hearts - five designers, almost 10 illustrators and graphic designers have been working on the design concept for almost 4 years and we’re overjoyed that we can finally show you the first two chapters of this epic saga.
