I recommend leaving out NPCs in your first game, since it will add complexity that isn't necessary for a first time game.

I have a couple house rules I recommend for first time players:
1) Start with 6,000 credits instead of the recommend 4000. You won't really know what you're doing yet, so it's fine to let people get a little bit faster start with better ships.
2) Xia is a dangerous place for ships, and sometimes players don't realize what sort of risks they're actually taking. If someone makes an intentionally risky play and gets burned, that's fine. But if someone doesn't realize the risk they're taking and then a bad thing happens to them, that can feel bad - personally, I would be generous in allowing takebacks in situations like that, since the first game should just be a learning game and not too competitive.
3) Xia really is a sandbox, so it can be overwhelming to not know the strategies to get a lot of points and money. I think it's useful to give a little strategy advice at the beginning: focus on getting money at the beginning of the game. The easiest way to do that is to collect 2 exploration tokens and turn them in for 2000cR. And then try to collect cargo cubes and sell them off at the matching planet. If Relics/Ember show up nearby The Kiln, then that can be good too. Once more sectors are explored, Missions can become more viable (and/or get the new Missions & Powers mini-expansion that I designed, which gives more options for early-game missions! )
4) Pick a relatively low Fame Point threshold for your first game, maybe 10 or 12. Then, when someone is within 2 points of the win, have a vote to see if you want to extend the game and increase the fame point threshold. If people are having fun, you can dynamically lengthen the game, and otherwise you can end it without letting things drag out too long.
5) In case anyone gets off to a bad start, I recommend starting the game with the Socialist Merchants event in play. It's a catch-up mechanic, and I like that for first time games.
Most importantly, have fun, and don't sweat any rules questions that come up. I look forward to hearing how it goes!
