Uwe's working title of the game was Hellabrunn, a zoo in the German city of Munich. Although it is Germany's third most visited zoo, I doubt that even all Germans know it's name. Outside of Germany practically no one would know it. Hence I was looking for a name that would work in other countries as well.
My favorite title was San Diego Zoo, but the license cost to use this trademark was simply too high. So I ended up with NYZ, which is not a name of an actual zoo, but a name that everyone around the world could imagine as a zoo. That's the story behind the title... And we didn't want to include any zoo specific graphics to be legally on the save side.
