ZitatSo, after the fourth HF4A game...
We will try going back to the 3rd ed. rule of Income-2WT (or, now "Aqua"), and Free Marketing-5WT. The game noticeably drags by the tighter money limits.
We are going back to the old political display.
Here is a quick list of changes that, overall, seem to be changes for changes' sake and have not improved the game but cause confusion because you keep remembering the old rules.
the game end condition (we're still sticking with that but really, I wish we'd just go back to the old n-factories rule because it was simple, trivial and easy to check)
the completely changed new freighter rule
the way in which order of play is now tied to the faction you are
The new 'H' cards (which for people playing the core game merely means that there are now cards that are basically useless for production since all 'H' sites are pretty much out of range)The retro changes in the faction cards (Shimizu is again without a thruster)
The political rules were a particular disappointment. Some of this may be in the fact that we're playing 2-player at the moment, but it is essentially a straight back-and-forward tug-of-war, since going for a third option means you basically waste a cube. That's not so much different from the old political game, but at several times the rules weight and fiddliness, and with the introduction of fake tradeoffs. (Why does meddling in politics mean you can build fewer factories?) It might still be interesting for multi-player games, so we may still try that.
But the really annoying bit and big mistake I made was that in trying to fully understand the new political rules, I read the footnotes to them. I must say my reaction to those was even more allergic than Delnore's to the bicameral concepts in Origins. At this point I'm sorry that I paid for the 4th edition.
