The new priestess figure moves around within the temple itself, giving bonuses to adjacent novices at the end of each round. The larger novice "preacher" figures give players extra strength on the islands. There are also some small balance updates to bribery tokens and the way books work.
And from developer Ralph Bruhn:
We learned over the years that Bribery and Book tokens are less used than the other tokens, so we decided to make them a LITTLE bit more interesting.
Bribery:
There is a third option now for using a Bribery token: You can play it as a separate action now: If you have a Novice which was kicked out of the temple and is now waiting for a tide or a sailboat, you can now also pay a Bribery token to the guard to let you sneak back into the temple again.
You can pick one of the empty tiles in the temple (there must be at least one).
You don't get points for this and you don't kick out other Novices - but you'll get the points at the end of the round.
Book:
Here we changed a little bit how to use them:
1. You can only take books from Novices which are standing upright on their books
2. When you put the new book under your Novice, you LAY the Novice down onto the book. This means that this book cannot be stolen in the current round.
3. You don't get the point for taking the book in the moment of taking it any more. Better: At the end of the round you get 1 point for every book you own!
4. At the end of the round every Novice has to get up: In the next round every book can be taken again
